Suras 1. Fatiha, 2. Al Baqara
Part 1
1 Fatiha
The Opener
- Sura Fatiha has the most oft repeated ayaat in the universe. Allah has called it “seven oft recited”
- Describes Allah and that all praise belongs to him
- Relationship between slave (‘Abd) and master (Rabb)
- We seek guidance with Fatiha
- Guidance as for those who received blessings (by being believers)
- Not those who gained anger (intentionally disobeying) or
- those who went astray. They may have good intentions but too lazy or complacent to do their own research to find the truth and just follow others blindly
- In the end of Fatiha we say “Ameen” (which means Allāh grant me what I asked for)
2 Al Baqara
The Cow
Revelation (Early Madani)
- Al Baqara is the longest Surah.
- Revealed in early madani period
Ayat Al Kursi, Last Two, Last Revelation
- Includes the best Ayat of Quran (Ayat al Kursi)
- Last two Ayaat are special (revealed directly to the Prophet ﷺ on Miraj)
- Includes the last Ayat revealed in Quran (2:281)
Categories of People
- 1)believers 2)disbelievers 3)hypocrites
All Topics of Aqeedah
- Existence of Allah, Angels, Message, Messengers/Prophets, Resurrection and Day of judgement.
- You did not exist and Allah created you and will cause you to be created again.
Pillars of Islam – Obligations / Prohibitions
- Five pillars of Islam are mentioned Tauheed, Salah, Zakah, Saum and Hajj
- Prohibition of Alcohol and Gambling
- Morals mentioned but morals are not enough by themselves
Laws in Islam
- (Marriage, Divorce, Economics, Contracts, Trading, Interest)
- Laws on marriage, divorce, economics, writing contracts and witnesses, trading.
- Biggest sin mentioned “taking interest”. Called War against Allah. It is a society issue not just individual
- Islam is not just a personal faith, it’s a society’s way of life
Prophets’ Stories
- Adam, Ibrahim, Ya’qub, Dawud, Suleman, Musa
- Adam عليه السلام, Story of our origin. The gift of intellect and eloquent speech given to humans. Only given to humans. Existence of Jinn
- Sinner who repents like Adam is success and sinner like Iblees who fails because he is arrogant and blames Allāh.
- Ibrahim عليه السلام who built the Ka’aba. First house of worship.
- Yaqu’b عليه السلام on deathbed advice on religion and who is your Rabb.
- Dawud عليه السلام winning over Galut. Do your best and no matter how small you are Allāh will help you.
- Suleman عليه السلام was righteous and still was slandered. He is defended by Allah in Quran.
- Musa عليه السلام is one of the biggest stories in Baqara. Stories of past nations like bani israel to learn. Sacrifice of cow, etc
Rationality of Islam and Interfaith Dialogue
- Prove truth of Islam in relationship to other civilisations and religions. Names of religions mean nothing, we follow the methodology of Ibrahim عليه السلام.
- How to do interfaith dialogue either with rationality, with history on favors on bani Israel, how Prophet ﷺ knows of insider knowledge.
- Religion is not based on whims or assumptions or sense of superiority of who enters paradise. Rather Allah put forward Quranic intellectual thought and asked the others to bring evidences. Whoever truly turns face to Allah and does righteous deeds will enter Jannah. Names do not mean anything. Someone can call himself Muslim but still not be a righteous slave.
Theology and History, Calenders & Moons
- Quran is Guidance, Challenge to Create like it
- Submit yourself completely to islam and Do not pick and choose and follow Shaytaan.
- The book has no doubts in it. It is a guidance. There is a challenge to create the like of one Surah as good as Quran. Call whoever you want to do it. If you cannot do it, and you will not be able to do it.
- In Fatiha we ask for guidance to the straight path. Al Baqara summarises what is guidance. Prophet ﷺ said the crown/pinnacle of the Quran is al-Baqara.
