Juz 12

Suras 12. Yusuf

Part 11

12 Yusuf

Late Makki – 111 Ayat – Revealed after Hud

  1. Three tragedies in life of Prophet ﷺ
    1. Death of Khadija رضي الله عنها
    2. Death of Abu Talib
    3. Rejection in Taif
  2. This Surah was a revealed to cheer up the Prophet ﷺ. Reminder of how success comes eventually.
  3. Entire story of Yusuf.
  4. Quran has the best stories
  5. Categories of Dreams
    1. Some dreams are from Allāh. These remain vivid and are symbolic.
    2. Nightmares and sexual dreams are from Shaytan.
    3. Mumbled dreams are from own desires and thoughts
  6. Wise people do not show off the blessings of Allah.
  7. When Allāh wants to bless someone, he blesses with knowledge. Prophet ﷺ said whoever Allāh desires good for He gives them knowledge of the religion.
  8. Pious households generally create righteous children. All children must be treated equally. Shaytan loves to cause dispute in families.

Jealousy Destroys Good Deeds

  1. Jealousy can drive people insane. Prophet ﷺ said that jealousy destroys good deeds like fire destroys dry wood.
  2. Repentance done before a deed is not repentance.
  3. Intuition of the believer is true. “Prophet ﷺ said beware of the intuition of the believer.” More righteous you are the righter is your instinct. Ya’qub عليه السلام has instincts that something was wrong with story of sons
  4. It is allowed to use secondary evidence to see if someone is telling the truth. (Shirt of Yusuf عليه السلام in blood was not torn).
  5. All crimes are first committed against Allāh. Ya’qub reminded his sons that they had comminuted crime against Allāh before saying against him or Yūsuf.
  6. Beautiful Patience of Ya’qub. Be dignified and let out emotions only to Allāh. It’s allowed to gain sympathy but best is to only rely and vent with Allāh.
  7. Protect your chastity and faith in youth. Allah will protect you on old age.
  8. Danger of interacting with opposite gender when there is temptation.
  9. To desire a sin is not a sin (it’s not healthy). Controlling is the essence of Taqwa and helps earn Jannah. Yusuf also found her desirable but was pious enough to stop.
  10. Urges and desires can only be controlled by turning to Allāh
  11. Gossip is Evil. Prophet ﷺ  said of the perfection of ones Iman is that one does not talk about what doesn’t concern him. Mumin does not talk about things which do not concern him
  12. Ego is evil. Ego comes from how we think others view us. Mumin only concerns with how he is in sight of Allah. He does not care how he appears in sight of others.
  13. Dangers of sexual desires if unchecked.
  14. Appreciate the blessings of Allah with what we have and what we don’t have. Sometimes not having something is also a blessing. imagine having the beauty of Yūsuf and how pious would we be. “Prophet ﷺ said sometime I give more money to one over another because I worry this would harm them and lead them to hell.” Whatever Allāh gave us these are the best tools and resources to get jannah.
  15. Inner beauty of manners is better than outer beauty. Real beauty is Iman and Taqwa.
  16. Injustice happens in this world. Total justice is only from Allāh.
  17. Actions are better than speech. Behaviour of Yusuf عليه السلام in jail attracted other prisoners to him for dream interpretation.
  18. Dawa is only done when people want to hear. Atmosphere, attitude are important. Do not be a nuisance doing dawah. Best dawa is with actions.
  19. The necessity of using the means to get goals. Do your best humanly possible then have tawakkul in Allāh. Indeed only with permission of Allah are intentions brought to reality. Prophet ﷺ said Allāh loves deeds done to perfection / with excellence.
  20. Haste is useless. Beautiful patience leads to sweet reward.  Yusuf عليه السلام remained in jail 7 years for being innocent. His piety made him a minister. Prophet ﷺ said May Allah have mercy on my brother Yusuf if I were in the jail instead of him I would have rushed to get out of the door when the kings courtier came. Yusuf عليه السلام had the patience to say First check my case because I was not guilty.
  21. Good character always brings benefit in every society even appreciated by sinner and evil people.
  22. Life is full of highs and lows.
  23. It is permissible to use halal tricks. Yusuf عليه السلام checking through bag of his brother bin Yamin in the end.
  24. Participating in the laws of land (of they don’t contradict with Islam) is allowed. Ends do not justify means so halal goal reached with a haram path is not allowed.
  25. Believer is always cautious. Prophet ﷺ said the believer is not stung from the same hole twice.
  26. The perfection of being generous changes hearts and minds. Yusuf عليه السلام was generous to his brothers so Ya’qub allowed bin Yamin to go with them.
  27. Believers always have a plan. Good strategy is part of faith
  28. Evil people also have potential of good in them. Brother of Yūsuf عليه السلام became stars in the end.
  29. Never lose hope in Allāh and his help
  30. Asking help from Allāh (or even asking help by complaining to Allāh) is part of Iman.
  31. Believer ascribes good to Allāh and evil to Shaytaan.
  32. Of the perfection of the believer is to not hurt others by his words. Aya 92 he said “No blame will be upon you today. Allah will forgive you. And he is the most merciful of the merciful”.
  33. Forgiving is always a virtue especially within a Family. When the Prophet ﷺ conquered Makkah the quraish was afraid and Prophet ﷺ repeated the Aya 92.
  34. Show respect to parents in all possible ways.
  35. Allah can bring reconciliation among the most hateful enemies. Hearts of Yūsuf and his brothers came together.
  36. What matters to Allāh is where and how you end. Plan ahead for a good future and may Allah make our best deeds our last ones and let us die in a state of worship as Muslims. Ameen.
The Quran and the Sunnah are the best gifts and let the believers rejoice for having them. Nothing in the Universe is better than these two gifts of Allah.
