Quran Summary by Juz

Here you will find a summary of the quran divided into 30 parts (or 30 Juz as it is called in arabic). These are my notes based on video lectures offered by Shiekh Dr. Yasir Qadhi in Ramadan 2020

Juz 18

Suras 23. Al Muminun, 24. An Nur

Part 17

23 Al Muminun (Believers)

Makki – 118 Ayaat

  1. Characteristics of Muminun and how they are protected by Allah. 
  2. Reality of Death & Day of Judgement

Characters of Believers

  1. 7 Characters mentioned of successful believers
    1. Successful are those who have Iman in Allah. 
    2. Humble in prayer (Khushu)
    3. Avoid useless matters
    4. Continual in charity
    5. Faithful in trusts/promises
    6. Safeguard their chastity
    7. Safeguard their prayers (properly and fulfil requirements and do on time). 
  2. They Inherit Firdaus 
  3. Prayer is mentioned twice. Focus on quality in salah. 

Stories of Prophets 

  1. Story Nuh, Musa and Isa Aya 23-50 
  2. Aya 44 we sent our messenger sin quick succession. Every time a prophet came they rejected him. 
  3. They split themselves into many groups and were happy in their group. Aya 53
  4. Prophet ﷺ reminded that People kept rejecting 

Allah comforts the Prophet ﷺ 

  1. Did they assume giving them wealth and children that Allāh is pleased with them. They have no idea. Aya 55-56. 
  2. Blessings in dunya are not necessarily related to happiness of Allah. 

Signs of Believers

  1. Aya 57 they are in awe of Allah. 
  2. Aya 58 They are those who believe in the verses. 
  3. Aya 60 they are those who give what Allāh has given them. Their hearts are trembling knowing they are going back to their lord. These are the people racing and winning towards 
  4. “Our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها asked why hearts trembling giving charity. Prophet ﷺ said these are the people who fast pray and give charity and terrified what if Allāh does not accept from them.” This is sincerity and high level of piety. 
  5. To doubt your piety is the essence of piety and to feel confident in your piety is arrogance. 

Reality of Death and it’s Rejectors 

  1. When Ayat of Quran are recited you would turn your backs arrogantly.  Spending night in frivolous persists and not paying heed to Ayat of Quran. Aya 66-68. 
  2. Quraish are told Prophet ﷺ is true and still they reject him. Aya 69-70

Reality of truth, ethics and morality 

  1. Aya 71 if truth confirmed to their desires the heaven and earth and all in them would be in ruin. 

Blessings of Allah 

  1. Aya 78 Allāh is the one who gave hearing sight and hearts (for thoughts and gratitude) and little gratitude you show. 
  2. Allah has multiplied us throughout the earth and to Him we will be gathered. Aya 79 
  3. Allah gives life and death and and causes alternation of night and day. Will we not reason. Aya 80. 
  4. The blessings of world should lead to belief in Allah and worshipping him. 

Challenge Idol Worship – multiple would Fight Each other

  1. Aya 84-90 Religions which have multiple gods are challenged
  2. Ask them to whom does the entire really belong. Who owns the heavens and the earth. In whose hand is dominion and protects and cannot be protected against. They would say Allāh. 

Impossibility of Multiple Gods

  1. Aya 91 neither has Allāh begotten a son nor is there a partner to him. If that were the case every God would have withdrawn with what he has created and they would have gone to war with another to gain supremacy. Glory be to Allah far away is He to what they ascribe to Him. 
  2. Multiple Gods cannot be in charge of entire Universe. They would end up fighting each other. 

Reality of Death – Believers / Disbeliever

  1. Aya 99-108 Summarised: When death comes one will say my Rabb send me back I want to do more good. But this will not be allowed and they will go into life of Barzakh.
  2. There will be no relations when trumpet is blown. 
  3. Whose scale is heavy will be successful and whose scale is light will be in punishment. 
  4. Prophet ﷺ said that Whoever is excited to meet Allāh. Allah is pleased to meet them. But humans still dislike death due to the uncertainty of the experience. Allah also does not like giving death to the believer because he doesn’t like death. 
  5. Their are two groups
    1. one which believe and ask for forgiveness. 
    2. One which ridiculed the believers and used to laugh at them. On day of judgement they will be punished. 
  6. When disbelievers will be asked how many years you lived and their book of deeds will be almost empty with things worth bringing. They will accuse of Allah of not having enough time. We just had a day or part of a day. They will say their is a mistake go ask the angels. They will go insane knowing that we have lost 50-90 years and did nothing.
  7. The disbelievers will never be successful. 

Dua of the Prophet ﷺ 

  1. Aya 118 say “ my Rabb forgive and have mercy and you are the best of the merciful”. 

24 An Nur (Light)

Mid Madani – 64 Ayaat – Preservation of Family

  1. Surah revealed after slander of our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها 
  2. Main theme around family and laws on fornication and Khimar. 

Legal Rulings Fornication – 4 Witnesses 

  1. Lashing of fornicators ordained. Needs to be done by the state in an Islamic land. Aya 2
  2. Fornicator can only marry a fornicator is being used to show it’s the same as marrying an idol worshipper. Aya 3
  3. It is permissible to marry one who has repented as scholars have understood. 
  4. 4 Eye witnesses for punishment. The bar is very high. If someone can’t bring 4 witnesses then it is the witness who becomes the liars in the sight of Allah. Those who accuse chaste women and cannot bring witnesses should be lashed themselves. It’s a major crime to accuse. 

Mutual cursing sharia law 

  1. Husband and Wife accusing the spouse of unfaithfulness don’t need 4 witnesses. 
  2. The accuser has to say 4 times they accuse and the accused can also say 4 times. 

Slander of Mother Aisha رضي الله عنها

  1. The hypocrites accused our mother Aisha of adultery. Allah revealed Quran to clear her name. 
  2. Aya 11 Those who produced this blatant lie. 
  3. Advice to Unsure Group
    1. Allah also chastised the people who were confused or were entertaining the thought. 
    2. Allah says when believer hear something like this they should say “this is an obvious lie” and always assume best of others
  4. Advice to Gossipers
    1. Strong criticism for those who spread the gossip. Allah says you thought it small matter but to Allāh it’s a major issue. 
    2. Anyone who listens to Gossip should say “it is not right for us to be discussing these things”. “SubhanAllah this is a great Slander”
  5. Prophet ﷺ said “Whoever covers the fault of his brother Allāh will cover their faults in front of mankind on the day of judgement.”
  6. If there is someone oppressing someone or causing harm to society this has to be publicly shared in whatever way to whichever authorities necessary. 
  7. Abu bakr رضي الله عنه told by Allāh to forgive, dont you want Allāh to forgive  you. 
  8. Forgive others who have wronged us and Allah will forgive you. 
  9. Allah says it was good for you. One reason could be that hypocrites were exposed. (Aya 11). Innocence of our mother was revealed. We learnt rules of witnesses and how we should act in society when it comes to slander and gossip. 
  10. Filthy women are for filthy men and pure men are for pure women and pure women are for pure men. Aya 26

Encourage Marriage 

  1. Those who are single are encouraged to marry. Even amongst the poor and servants. If they are poor Allāh will give them sustenance from their bounty. Aya 32
  2. Parents should check that if children are physically and emotionally ready to marry they should get children married. Do not make it dependant of finances and do not be selfish about earning of your children. Do not make marriage difficult. If you make halal difficult people will goto haram. 

Etiquettes of Entering House and Children Entering Rooms 

  1. Do not barge into others houses. If no permission given then go away. Public places can be entered without permission. Aya 29
  2. Teaching children when to enter bedrooms and when older don’t enter anytime without asking. Aya 58-59
  3. Saying Salam when you enter. 
  4. Eating alone or together both allowed.  

Lowering the Gaze – Khimar – Ease For Elderly

  1. Lowering the gaze is pure for you and protect your chastity. This is for both genders. Aya 30
  2. Women are required to not display their beauty except what they cannot control. And let them draw their “Khimar” over their chest. The cloth which covers the head is Khimar. “khamr” is alcohol which covers the head (clouds the mind). Aya 31
  3. Women have been given privilege of being beautiful and this comes with responsibility. 
  4. Anyone who says Khimar is not headscarf does not understand Arabic. 
  5. Aya 60 the elder my ladies there is no sin on them if they are laced on the rules of hijab but if they are modest it is better. 

Ayat An Nur 

  1. Aya of Light Aya 35 
  2. Allah is the ultimate Light of Guidance. Coming to Allāh is light. 
  3. The Light of Quran and Light of Prophet ﷺ
  4. Explanation by Yasir Qadhi: example is for Prophet ﷺ
    1. Chest is Niche 
    2. Lamp (glass) is heart
    3. Candle is Iman (or Ruh) (oil for candle is from olive tree). 
    4. Olive tree is Quran
    5. Candle is lit by olive tree not from this world (olive tree is Quran)
    6. Quran revealed to the heart of Prophet ﷺ which lights up Iman (candle) in his heart. 
    7. Light upon light can mean Quran and Sunnah combining together.
The Quran and the Sunnah are the best gifts and let the believers rejoice for having them. Nothing in the Universe is better than these two gifts of Allah.
