78 An Naba (The Announcement)
Makki – 40 Ayaat – Prepare for Judgement Day
- Question Aya 1. About what are they asking one another?
- They are going to know soon
- Allah’s blessings and how earth is smooth and mountains majestic
- Punishment of Jahannum
- Blessings in Jannah
- The punishment is near on a day when Jibraeel and angels are standing in rows. None can speak that day except those who have permission and people who get permission will only speak truth
The Wish of Losers on That Day
- Aya 40 Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, “Oh, I wish that I were dust!”
- The animals will turn into dust on the day of judgement. They don’t have takleef (legal responsibility). They will have Qisas amongst them as well and then they will be transformed into dust. The disbelievers will also wish to be dust like that.
79 An Nazi’at (Those Who Drag Forth)
Makki – 46 Ayaat – Judgement Day
- Death and angel of death different dealing with pious and disbeliever
- Snatch violently vs take gently
Story of Musa عليه السلام and Firaun
- Firaun gathered his troops and called himself god. So Allāh made an example of him for all people. Surely there is a sign for those who are fearful of Allah.
Power of Allah and Day of Judgement
- Are you more difficult to create or the heavens and the skies
- Day of judgement called over whelming calamity. On that day every single soul shall remember what habe I done. Hell will be displayed for all.
- The one who preferred dunya hell will be shelter.
- One who feared lord and controlled his desires Jannah will be his abode.
- The time in dunya will feel like barely an afternoon
80 ‘Abasa (He Frowned)
Makki – 42 Ayaat
- The background of this sura from Ibn ummi makhthum, blind man, lower class in Qureshi. He converted early to Islam. One of the two official Mu’athin (Other being Bilal رضي الله عنه)
- One day our Prophet ﷺ was speaking with Waleed Ibn mugeerah, he was the one who suggested the idea that if prophet ﷺ got rid of the lower class people he may convert (Mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf)
- Ibn ummi makhthum heard the voice of prophet ﷺ and he rushed to speak to him
- Al Waleed seeing this walked away.
- Prophet ﷺ frowned at Ibn ummi makhthum. This surah was revealed.
- Allah loves sincerity and purity of the heart. This was in the blind person and not in Waleed. Power and fame in dunya doesn’t mean anything to Allāh. The sincerity of heart is meaningful
Family disowned of non pious People
- Day of Judgement will come. On that day one will run away from own blood relations. Family members will want to sue each other for deeds.
Radiant Faces
- Some faces will be radiant and some will be covered by dust and black of disbelievers Aya 38-42
81 At Takwir (The Overthrowing)
Makki – 29 Ayaat – Judgement Day Events
- Events on the Day of Judgment
The Noble Messenger i.e. Angel Jibraeel
- Aya 19. (That) indeed, it (i.e., the Quran) is a word (conveyed by) a noble messenger (i.e., Gabriel)
- Where else are you going? (i.e. away from the Quran Aya 26)
- What alternative is there to Islam in this universe?
82 Al Infitar (The Cleaving)
Makki – 19 Ayaat – Judgement Day and Power of Allah
- Aya 6. O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Rabb, the Ever Generous (Ever Merciful).
- How magnificent is Allāh that all humans are unique
- Mentions Janna and Jahannum
- No one will help anyone on that day

83 Al Mutaffifin (Those Who Cheat Others)
Makki – 36 Ayaat – Honesty and Manners
- Those who cheat and defraud others. Early values of Islam are honesty and mannerism.
- Those who defraud others, when receiving they want all but when sell they short change. Do they not think they will be resurrected. The day of judgement will come.
Pure vs Rusted Hearts
- Because of what they do, Their hearts have become rusted Aya 14
- The heart is not apart from outer actions. If someone sins and says harmful things with the mouth then the heart is also not pure
- Pure heart leads to pure actions and evil heart leads to evil actions
- The opposite is pure heart. Qalbin Saleem.
- Aya 15. No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.
- The punishment of disbeliever is that that they won’t be able to see Allāh.
Compete for Janna
- Description of Janna and pure wine in Janna. Even the last few drops of it are like musk so for this let the competitors compete. Aya 26
84 Al Inshiqaq (The Splitting Open)
Makki – 25 Ayaat – Events of Akhira and Families
- When the sky is split open and earth extended both responding to their lord they were obligated to do so. They must obey command of Allah
- O man you are labouring towards Allah with great difficulty you shall meet him. Your acts can be good or bad but everyone Labors. Two categories
The Right hand
- The one on right hand will have easy account. He will return to his family happy.
- These families are not running away from each other.
- Aya 9. And return to his people in happiness
- Those families who choose Allah will have true happiness in akhira
Book Behind Back
- That person will meet his fate and goto fire of hell. He used to be happy with family in world and thought he would never return to Allāh.
85 Al Buruj (The Constellations)
Makki – 22 Ayaat – People of Trench
- Aya 3 is very deep should see tafseer
People of the trench
- The believers were persecuted for not accepting Christianity from Christian arabs. The kings of Najran built a big trench and they were tied and thrown and killed.
- They were killed because they believed in Allāh
Optimistic Aya
- Some scholars consider this as a optimistic Aya
- Aya 10. Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
- Thought optimistic because even the torturing people were given the opportunity to repent and Allah would forgive them.
Lawhil mahfuudh
- Aya 21 But this is an honored Quran

86 At Tariq (The Morning Star)
Makki – 17 Ayaat – Quran Decider Day of Judgement
- Allah swears by sky and night comer. Piercing star
- Every soul has an angel watching what is being done.
The Miracle of Creation
- Man is created from fluid and can be brought again. Aya 5-7
- Allah is showing us how he has created us and how we can be created again. Now that we believe we can be recreated then Allah says take the Quran seriously.
All secrets will be known
- Aya 9. The Day when secrets will be put on trial,
- For believers their records will be hidden from others and we should pray for this.
Quran is Decider – Allāh Giving Oath
- Allah does not need to make oaths but only does it to emphasize the point so that we understand the significance of the issue
- Aya 13 indeed Quran is a (firm) decisive statement.
- Aya 14 And it is not amusement
- Quran will decide everything from right and wrong. Not our owns assumptions and whims.
Allah is The Ultimate Planner
- Aya 15 Indeed they are planning a plan
- Aya 16 But I am planning a plan
- Aya 17 so allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.
87 Al A’la (The Most High)
Makki – 19 Ayaat – Power of Allāh
- Very powerful Ayaat
- Prophet ﷺ used to read this surah in jumuah Salah,Eid Salah in first rakah.
- Praise the name of Allah
- Who created and fashioned. He ordained and guided.
- We are going to recite the Quran and you shall not forget. If Allāh wills there will be abrogations (rules superseding older ones)
- Remind if the reminder should benefit. Who has fear of Allah will benefit. The evil will avoid it.
Purification of the Soul – Purpose of Deen
- The one who purifies himself is the one who is successful
- He remembers the name of Allah and prays to Allah
- Prefer Life of Akhira over Dunya
88 Al Ghashiyah (The Overwhelming)
Makki – 40 Ayaat – Punishment and Reward on Day of Judgement
- Prophet ﷺ used to read this sura in Jumah and Eid in second rakah
Day of Judgment
- Description of those being punished then those being rewarded
- Some faces would be humbled they would have worked hard but they will still be entered into hell due to working hard for dunya or wrong things
- Some faces will be pleased and satisfied with their effort. They will be given Jannah
Miracles of Creation
- How the sky is raised, the camel is created, the mountains are erected, the earth is spread out
Remind and To Allāh Is Account
- Our job is only to remind and to everyone will return to Allāh. Our job is not be an enforcer or be in charge over others.
89 Al Fajr (The Dawn)
Makki – 30 Ayaat – Akhira is Life
- Allah takes an oath by the dawn and the ten sacred nights of Ramadan (last 10)
- Isn’t this enough oath for people of intelligence
- Destruction of the previous nations
- The mentality of man while blessed or punished
- When man is tested with favours he is thankful and when man is tested with reducing provision man thinks himself humiliated
- Whether Allāh gives or does not give wealth and children. The path to Jannah is the same based on our deeds.
- Events on the Day of Judgment
Real Life is Akhira
- judgement day will come and angels will come in rows and everyone will remember everything
- Aya 24. He will say, “Oh, I wish I had sent ahead (some good) for my life.”
- As for believers Allāh will tell the Believers Allah is pleased with them and to enter Paradise
90 Al Balad (The City).
Makki – 20 Ayaat – Believers Take Difficult Path of Allah
- Double oath Aya 1. I swear by this city (i.e., Makkah)
- Creation of man
- Man is created in constant struggle. Does man think that none can overcome him. Man should take effort to take the difficult path
Difficult Path For Allāh
- Aya 13.It is the freeing of a slave, 14. Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 15. An orphan of near relationship 16. Or a needy person in misery
- The one who takes the difficult path shall be believer and recommended each other to patience and compassion
91 Ash Shams (The Sun)
Makki – 15 Ayaat – Purification of Nafs
- Over 10 oaths Aya 1-7
- Allah swears by the Nafs and then He showed the nafs difference of good and evil
Bottom line of 10 Oaths – Purify The Soul
- Aya 9. He has succeeded who purifies it, (his soul)
- Aya 10. And he has failed who instills it (with corruption).
- Destruction of the wrongdoing people
- Aya 15. And He does not fear the consequence thereof
- Allah destroyed the people of Thamud and He does not fear the consequences of this destruction. No one can harm Allah عزّ وجلّ
92 Al Layl (The Night)
Makki – 21 Ayaat – Ease towards Allah, Difficulty Away from Allāh
- Aya 4. Indeed, your efforts are diverse
Two Catagories of Goals
- Goal of Hasana
- Aya 5. As for he who gives and fears Allah
- Aya 6. And believes in the best (reward),
- Aya 7. We will ease him toward ease.
- Goal of Stinginess and Denial
- Aya 8. But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
- Aya 9. And denies the best (reward),
- Aya 10. We will ease him toward difficulty.
93 Ad Dhuha (The Morning Hours)
Makki – 11 Ayaat – Hope in Allah
- Prophet ﷺ was worried because revelation did not come
Optimistic and Hope in Allāh
- Aya 4 And the Hereafter is better for you than the first (life)
- Always think tomorrow will be better than today. Look at the positive aspect of life and always be optimistic
- Always look the positive of the past and be thankful. See how Allāh took care of you in the past
- If you can’t give money to a needy, give a good word. Dont ever treat the orphan or beggar harshly.
- Always share the blessings of Allah. The greatest blessing of Allah is Islam and Quran, share it with others
94 Ash Sharh (The Consolation)
Makki – 8 Ayaat – Count Blessings – Ease Will Come
- Aya 5 With every difficulty there will be ease Aya 6 For indeed, with hardship (will be) ease (i.e., relief).
- Aya 7. So when you have finished (your duties), then stand up (for worship)
- Stand in prayer and always desire Allah. Make Allāh and His Pleasure your goal
95 At Tin (The Fig)
Makki – 8 Ayaat – Man Makes Choice of Good or Evil
- Aya 1. By the fig and the olive (Jesus)
- Aya 2 And (by) Mount Sinai (Moses)
- Prophet ﷺ is in the company of these prophets and in succession
- Aya 3 And (by) this secure city (i.e., Makkah),
- Man is created in best of stature by Allah.
- When man rejects Allāh and commits evil Aya 5 then We Return him to the lowest of the low
- Allah is the most just judge. Allah is Adl
96 Al Alaq (The Clot)
Makki – 19 Ayaat – Knowledge and Spirituality
- The first revelation Aya 1 Recite in the name of your Lord who created
- As a messenger unlettered When you have Allāh you don’t need books to read
- Aya 4: Who taught by the pen
- Allah taught man the use of pen and we are the only species that can document and share knowledge with later generations
Two Types of Knowledge
- Revealed knowledge of Allah
- Islam, worship, theology, ethics, seerah of Prophet ﷺ
- Observed knowledge of this world
- Science, history,
Knowledge must Accompany Action and Purification
- Triangular basis of Islam: Knowledge-Action-Purification
- Later mentions on Abu jahl who forbids worship of Allah
97 Al Qadr (The power,Fate).
Makki – 5 Ayaat – Night of Decree
- A night better than 1000 months
- All angels come down including Jibraeel the leader. They come with the qadr of Allah

98 Bayyinah (The Evidence)
Madani – 8 Ayaat – Message is Clear
- Disbelievers will not stop until clear proof will come to pagans and Ahl e kitab
- The clear proof is Quran recited by the Prophet ﷺ
- Rewards and punishment for those who believe and disbelieve
99 Az Zalzalah (The Earthquake).
Makki – 8 Ayaat – Judgement Day Earthquake
- The final earthquake will happen on Day of Judgment. Earth will throw out everything (bodies, secrets)
- Aya 6. That Day, the people will depart separated (into categories) to be shown (the result of) their deeds.
- Groups on day of judgement are based on piety and deeds
Never Trivialize any Deed
- Aya 7 So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,
- Aya 8 And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it
100 Al Adiyath (The Galloping Horses)
Makki – 11 Ayaat – Man is Ungrateful and Rejects Allāh
- Allah takes oath by the galloping of horse
- The language of the Quran is mesmerising and beautiful
- Horses are obedient and loyal to their master (man) when they are ridden, whereas mankind is disobedient and disloyal to his Creator (Master)
- 6. Indeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful. Aya 7 And Indeed he is to that a witness
- 8. And indeed he is, in love of wealth, intense.
- 11. Indeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is (fully) Acquainted.
101 Al Qari’ah (The Calamity)
Makki – 11 Ayaat – Akhira is Calamity for Those who Deny
- Aya 1. The Striking Calamity –
- Aya 2. What is the Striking Calamity?
- Aya 3. And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
- Aya 4. It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,
- The one whose scales are heavy will have a pleasant life. The one whose scales are light his refuge is eternal fire
102 At Takathur (Competition)
Makki – 8 Ayaat – Rat Race/ Materialism
- The evil of rat race, worldly competition and materialism
- Aya 1. Competition in (worldly) increase diverts you (from focus on most important goal akhira)
- Aya 2. Until you visit the graveyards (which means when we die and even the grave is a visit because we have to wake up again)
- Aya 8. Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure
- If one knew the reality of afterlife you would never waste your time in competing for dunya
- Everyone will see the fire (Muslim will see from far away).
- On that day one will be asked about all blessings, how they were acquired and how they were used
103 Al Asr (The Declining Day,Epoch)
Makki – 3 Ayaat – Four Steps to Jannah
- Imam Shafi’i remarked that this Sura could have been enough as a revelation
- Aya 1. By time,
- Aya 2. Indeed, (all) mankind is in loss,
- Aya 3. Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience
104 Al Humazah (The Backbiting, Slander)
Makki – 9 Ayaat – Evil of Backbiting
- Aya 1. Woe to every scorner and mocker
- Humaza: backbiting
- Lumaza: slander
- Prophet ﷺ said “Of the perfection of ones Iman is that one leaves what does not concern him”
- One who finds faults in others is also stingy
- Aya 2. Who collects wealth and (continuously) counts it.
- Aya 3. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal
- Aya 4. No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher
105 Al Fil (The Elephant)
Makki – 5 Ayaat – Miracle of Allāh
- Have you not considered, (O Muhammad), how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant.
- Quraish reminded the lord who has done this is worthy of worship.
106 Al Quraish (Arab Tribe)
Makki – 4 Ayaat – Favour of Allah on Quraish
- The honor and reputation Allah had given them as guardians of the Holy Kabah, which allowed them to travel without fear of being harmed
- The trading caravans that traveled south in winter and north in summer
- They were socially and politically the most powerful tribes of Arab due to their trade caravans between the different empires
- The favour of Allah upon them should make them worship Him alone
107 Al Ma’un (Small Good Deeds)
Makki – 7 Ayaat – Iman is Charity and Goodness
- The small assistances
- Aya 1. Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?
- He drives away the orphan and does not encourage feeding the poor
- Aya 5. (But) who are heedless of their prayer.
- The ones who want to show off charity or prayer are being warned
108 Al Kawthar (Abundance)
Makki – 3 Ayaat –
- Allah comforts the prophet ﷺ at his son’s death (AbdAllah) and some mocked him for not having a male heir
- Aya 1. Indeed, We have granted you, (O Muhammad), al-Kawthar.
- The water of Kawthar is whiter than snow, sweeter than honey, one sip is never thirsty for eternity
- Aya 2. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him alone).
- Aya 3. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off
109 Al Kafirun (The Disbelivers)
Makki – 6 Ayaat – Shirq
- The quraish agreed to worship Allah if Muslims worship false gods
- Islam categorically denies shirq. There is no pick and choose in the deen
110 An Nasr (Divine Support)
Makki – 3 Ayaat – Islam Flourishing
- Allah indicated the death of prophet ﷺ is near.
- Aya 1. When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest.
111 Al Masad (The Palm Fibre)
Makki – 5 Ayaat – Fate of Abu Lahb
- Allah mention the name of Abu Lahab due to his evil nature.
- His wife and their punishments in the hereafter
112 Al Ikhlas (Sincerity)
Makki – 4 Ayaat – Powerful Description of Allāh and Monotheism
- One third of Quran.
- Refute trinity, idolatry, atheism, polytheism.
- Affirms Monotheism in a unique Eloquence.
- As-samad. The one to whom all creations turn to in need. The ultimate refuge.
- Aya 4. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.
- There is no one in the universe like Allāh
- The love to this surah cased a sahabi to enter Jannah
113 Al Falaq (Daybreak)
Madani – 5 Ayaat – Protection from Magic and Envy
- Revealed after some magic was done to the Prophet ﷺ
- Lord of morning and king and god of mankind
- Audhu means to take refuge and be enveloped in Allahs protection
- This and the following surah were revealed together and are recited when seeking Allah’s protection from all kinds of evil
114 Surah An Nas (Humanity)
Madani – 6 Ayaat – Protection from Whispers and Evil
- Protection from evil
