Quran Summary by Juz

Here you will find a summary of the quran divided into 30 parts (or 30 Juz as it is called in arabic). These are my notes based on video lectures offered by Shiekh Dr. Yasir Qadhi in Ramadan 2020

Juz 8

Suras 7. Al A’raf

Part 7

7 Al A’raf  (People in High Places/ Elevations)

Mid to Late Makki Era

  1. Similar timeframe as Surah Al A’nam 
  2. Perpetual battle between good and evil. Shaytaan and Iblis. Believers and non believers. 
  3. Longest makka Surah. 206 verses. Juz and a quarter. First of the longest Surahs. 

Stories of Nations – Belief in Quran

  1. Aya 3 how many nations came before us. We should think about history and we will die as well. 
  2. Aya 7 we are gonna tell you stories of knowledge and truth. 

Adam and Iblis

  1. Aya 11-25 story of Adam and Iblis
  2. We are honoured creation of Allah. Angels were asked to bow. We should be thankful and live an honorable life. 
  3. Dangers of arrogance and pride of Iblis. Arrogance is one of the unforgivable sins in a hadith. 
  4. Evil of racism (in Iblis) who said he is better because of what he is created from. Even if we have more piety we should not belittle others. 
  5. Even Iblis made Dua to Allāh to live longer even though he rejects the commands. Allah even answers Dua of Iblis, how can we not believe in Allah. He was foolish to be jealous 
  6. Iblis is an enemy to us and we should know. Iblis ultimately wants to misguide humans out of jealousy. 

Always Blame Yourself 

  1. Aya 16 iblis blazed Allāh and he will attack from front, back, right and left. 
  2. Aya 23 Adam called himself the wrongdoer. If we blame our sins on Allāh this is being like Shaytaan. 
  3. What Allāh has commanded you to do, this is in your power and you can not blame Qadr. Prophet ﷺ said all children of Adam are sinners. The best sinners are those who repent. 

Modesty, Decency and Covering Aura 

  1. Aya 26-33. Shaytaan wants us to become immoral and remove our clothing. Allāh has sent down clothing to humans. It is a gift not given to other creation like animals
  2. Covering of Taqwa is better than covering of clothes. True civilisation is embracing and dignifying ourselves with modest clothes. 
  3. Aya 31 wear good clothes to Masjid. 
  4. Aya 32 who can make the beauty of what Allah has made halal and make it prohibited. Allah calls halal beautiful and how dare anyone make it 

People in High Places (between heaven and hell) 

  1. Aya 34 there are people of A’raf are eager to enter Jannah and they can see both people in hell and heaven. Basically three categories of people
    1. People of Jannah
    2. People of Jahannum
    3. People of A’raf (Elevations) 
  2. People of A’raf are the sinful amongst Muslims. They failed the exam but not F. Struggling Muslims who committed major sins etc. 
  3. We should read these ayaat and see where we lie. May Allah protect us. Ameen 

Stories of Prophets – Good vs Evil

  1. Aya 59 nuh, 65 Hud 73 Saleh 80 Lut 85 Shoaib 
  2. Common theme is good vs evil. Message is to be grateful to Allāh, worship him and live an ethical life. 
  3. They all ridiculed the messenger calling him misguided and people don’t want to give up their own forefathers. 
  4. Islam threatens the powerful tyrannical people in society due to equality and its good values. 

How Calamities Can Strike

  1. Aya 96 had people believed Allāh would have blessed them. But they reject so we 
  2. Aya 97-98 Do people feel secure that our power will not overtake them at home while they sleep. Or during the day. Only believers are always afraid of power of Allah. 
  3. Aya 100 those who inherit after the previous people can they not see we could punish for their sins. 

Story of Musa عليه السلام and Firaun and Bani Israel

  1.  Aya 104-170 Conversion of sorcerers from worst to the best people. They were willing to die for the sake of Allah. 
  2. Complaining and irritation from within the camp of believers. Those who are not firmly on Imaan. Also there in followers of Musa عليه السلام as well as in muslims. Aya 129 followers of Musa complained to him we are still being punished. They wanted perfection and ease instantaneously. They started worshipping a false God. 
  3. Aya 133 five punishments came like the flood, locust and blood during time of Musa عليه السلام and they asked to get rid of it so they would believe but when it was lifted they remained unthankful.
  4. Musa asking to see Allāh. No human is able to do this from the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. This is the ultimate the goal of all Muslims who will look at the face of Allāh in Jannah. 
  5. Musa عليه السلام is given the tablet written by Allah’s hand. 
  6. Three people spoke to Allāh Musa عليه السلام, Adam عليه السلام and Prophet ﷺ. 
  7. Bani Israel started worshipping the golden Calf. When Musa عليه السلام returned and for angry at seeing. He threw the tablets and they broke. He first got angry at Harun. Harun replies son of my mother my own people were about to kill me. Harun and Musa عليه السلام were blood brothers and prophets yet they are not required to do the same things. Everyone has his own purpose. 
  8. Musa عليه السلام later calmed down and asked for forgiveness and collected 
  9. Aya 156 Allah says my punishment only some but my mercy encompasses everything. Especial mercy for righteous. 

Following the Prophet ﷺ 

  1. Aya 157 those who follow the unlettered Prophet ﷺ who is mentioned in own books, commands good deeds, forbids evil, allows pure, disallows filthy, frees them from bondages (of ignorance, desires, live for the moment wrong ideas). Therefore whoever believes and supports the prophet these are the people who are successful. 

Story of the Fisherman – Sabbath

  1. People among bani Israel not allowed to fish on Saturday (sabbath). They would trick by leaving on Friday and pick up on Sunday. 
  2. Three groups in Sabbath Fishermen
    1. Those who transgressed
    2. Those who advised
    3. Those who said to advisor why do you care and was neutral. 
  3. Allah saved the one who advised. Key lessons
    1. No one can trick Allāh
    2. Never feel arrogance against transgressor or sinners 

Laziness or Knowledge without Benefit

  1. Aya 169 A generation after Musa عليه السلام who got lazy, committed and said Allāh will forgive us. 
  2. Allah is ghafoor and rahim for those who need 
  3. Aya 175 and 176 one who Allāh blessed with knowledge but knowledge did not benefit but became arrogant. 
  4. Knowledge should always lead to spirituality. 

Ghil

  1. Aya 43 When people will enter Jannah the anger and hatred (Ghil) will be removed with gardens and rivers and people will say praise to Allah who guided us. 
  2. Whoever attains a pure heart in this world has attained a piece of Jannah in this world. 

Allah is Wali / Summary of Islam

  1. Aya 196 my wali ( protector) Allah, who has sent the book down and he shall take care of the righteous people. 
  2. Aya 199 be tolerant and merciful, command that which good, turn away from the ignorant. 
  3. Aya 201 Shaytaan will Whisper and the righteous are reminded that this is from Shaytaan and do not act upon it. 
  4. Overcoming bad thoughts is the essence of piety. 

Pay Attention Quran 

  1. Aya 204 when Quran is recited py attention so that you may receive mercy Allah. 

Conclusion – Dua/Dhikr is weapon against Evil

  1. Aya 205-206 struggle between truth and evil. Dhikr of Allāh / Dua to Allāh is our weapon. Silently and humbly morning and night. Aya 205 and 206
  2. We thank Allāh for having guided us and we would have never been guided unless had chosen us to be guided. 
The Quran and the Sunnah are the best gifts and let the believers rejoice for having them. Nothing in the Universe is better than these two gifts of Allah.
