Dua after breaking the Fast

  1. ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
  2. Gone is the thirst, quenched are the veins, and assured is the reward if Allah wills. (Abi Dawud 2357) (Mishkat al-Masabih 1993) Grade Hasan according to Al-Albani

Other Dua based on weak hadith

There is another Dua based on weak hadith shared for Iftar

  1. ‏ اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ
  2. This Narration is Mursal and Weak. Additionally, words have been added to it, which cannot be found in any authentic narration (Abi Dawud 2358)

additionally, another dua is commonly shared for time of Suhoor. However, I could not find any specific dua for time of Suhoor in Quran or authentic Hadith

Break Fast with Dates and Water

  1. The Prophet (ﷺ) said “When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates for they are blessed. If they are not found, let him break it with water for it is pure.” (Tirmidhi 694 695 Grade Sahih)
  2. Anas bin Malik narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would break the fast with fresh dates before performing Salat. If there were no fresh dates then (he would break the fast) with dried dates, and if there were no dried dates then he would take a few sips of water.” (Tirmidhi 696)

Dua Acceptance when breaking Fast

  1. Dua is accepted from the fasting person when he breaks his fast (Tirmidhi 3598) (Ibn Majah 1752) (Mishkat al-Masabih 2249) (Ibn Majah 1753)

Reason Why Only Authentic Duas Should Be Recited

Using the authentic dua for breaking Fast is a matter of following the Sunnah correctly. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned against adding to or altering the religion. He said:

“Whoever introduces something into this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.” (al-Bukhari 2697) (Muslim 1718a)

The Prophet (ﷺ) warned against attributing false statements to him, stating:

“Whoever tells a lie against me deliberately, let him take his place in Hell.” (al-Bukhari 109)

By sticking to authentic dua for breaking fast, we ensure that our worship is sincere and in line with the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) and not introducing innovations (bid’ah) into worship. It’s not just about the words we say but about the intention and authenticity behind them. Since we have learned the authentic dua when breaking fast, that should suffice for us.
